Central Otago, located in New Zealand’s South Island, is steeped in a rich history shaped by gold mining, agriculture, and resilient communities. The region gained prominence during the 1860s gold rush, attracting prospectors from around the world.
As the gold waned, settlers turned to farming, with sheep and fruit growing becoming key industries. Māori presence predates European settlement, and the region’s rugged landscape reflects both their traditional ways and the challenges faced by pioneers.
Today, Central Otago’s rich history is honored and celebrated by our five Central Otago museums – Central Stories, Clyde Museum, Maniototo Early Settlers Association, Cromwell Museum and Teviot District Museum.
The Central Otago Museums Trust unites and promotes the network of five museums across Central Otago.
