Teviot District Museum, Roxburgh
From expansive sheep runs to pioneering hydroelectric power and fruit growing industries – discover the Teviot Valley’s remarkable innovations.
11 Abbotsford Street, Roxburgh
Housed in the district’s first Methodist Church, built in 1872, this Early Settler Museum showcases the resilience and ingenuity of Teviot Valley pioneers. This region wasn’t just settled – it was transformed through innovation. Explore the histories of the largest woolshed of the time in the Southern Hemisphere, the early hydroelectric stations that brought power to remote communities, and the resourcefulness of the pioneer men and women involved in orcharding and businesses.
The museum’s diverse collection spans machinery and tools from gold mining, pastoral farming and orchard operations, a great collection of historic domestic items , photographs and documents detailing early settlement, Chinese artefacts, and various artefacts connected to the region’s early industrial projects. These weren’t just communities – they were forerunners in practical solutions to the pioneering challenges faced in our Central Otago’s terrain and climate.
77 Scotland Street, Roxburgh
This newly developed Lodge Museum provides displays grounded in the histories established in the Early Settler Museum and extends these to include Teviot Valley developments right up to contemporary times.
On completion, the displays in the main hall will include the histories of churches and businesses, several aspects of farming and shearing, fruit growing and other horticultural industries, transport with a special focus on railway, the Roxburgh Hydro, the Children’s Health Camp and a section on Clubs, Arts and Culture.
This Museum has a smaller area where exhibitions are currently being held, and research and archive areas will also be developed. Collection items are available for viewing online on e-Hive Teviot District Museum and on DigitalNZ.
