Clyde Museum

Step into Clyde’s gold rush past and explore a town shaped by history and innovation.

Clyde Museum captures the spirit of one of Central Otago’s most historic towns, once a bustling centre of the 1860s gold rush and now a treasured heritage destination. Housed in the Old Council Chambers, the museum preserves both the stories of the town and the character of its historic building.

Its displays bring to life the experiences of early miners, settlers, and families who shaped the district, featuring mining tools, domestic artefacts, and rare photographs. Special exhibitions explore Clyde’s evolution, including the town’s connection to the construction of the Clyde Dam, one of New Zealand’s most significant hydroelectric projects.

Visitors can step back in time to explore the layers of local history, gaining insight into the resilience, innovation, and community spirit that continue to define Clyde and Central Otago today.
