Our Land. Our People. Our History.
A connected network of museums across Central Otago.
Place
As you cross into Central Otago, something changes. The air feels sharper, the skies wider, the landscape more dramatic.
Dry hills, rocky valleys, and open plains stretch across a region shaped by extremes. With its dry heat and piercing cold, this is an environment that has always demanded something of those who call it home.
Long before European settlement, Māori travelled these inland routes, forming deep connections to the land and waterways.
During the 1860s gold rush, prospectors arrived from around the world in search of fortune and new beginnings.
As the gold waned, farming, orcharding, and small rural communities came to define the way of life here.
Today, Central Otago’s rich history is honoured and celebrated by our five Central Otago museums.
