Russell was born and educated in Dunedin and spent the majority of his working life in TV Broadcasting.  He also worked in media management for the University of Otago before retiring to Clyde.  He has extensive governance experience in sporting organisations and in the museum and  heritage sectors as well as Local Government.  He is a published author and writes widely on Central Otago heritage.  He enjoys riding local bike trails and plays golf socially.
